Hospice volunteers are individuals, or groups, who graciously give of their time and talents to help hospice in many ways. At Main Street Hospice we provide training and support to equip our volunteers with what they need to be able to volunteer in the capacity desired. Our volunteers provide no hands-on care. There is no number of hours required to volunteer – it is strictly at the volunteers’ availability. Following are some ways you may choose to participate:
> Patient or Caregiver Companionship
The volunteer spends time with the patient or caregiver and develops a friendship. Hospice tries to match volunteers and patients with similar hobbies and likes.
> Caregiver Respite
The volunteer sits with the patient to provide a few hours respite for the caregiver.
> The “Eleventh Hour” Volunteers
It is a goal of Main Street Hospice that no patient dies alone. The Eleventh-Hour Volunteers sit at the bedside of the hospice patient residing in a facility when death appears to be imminent.
> Music Therapy
"When words fail, music speaks." This service allows for our patients to enjoy the music they once did by a volunteer either playing an instrument or singing for them. Main Street also offers CD players and CDs to patients.
> Pet Therapy
This service allows our patients to receive love from our "volunteers" with fur. Dog must be certified, and handler must stay with dog at all times during visit.
> Administrative Volunteer/Office Volunteer
The administrative volunteer assists with special events and projects. The office volunteer assists with duties in the office – duties vary but may include bereavement mailings, putting together serenity/memory baskets for our patients, bagging gloves for field staff, etc.
> “We Honor Veterans” Volunteers
Our Veteran volunteers are those who have served in the military and help our team to honor our patients who have served in the military. Veteran volunteers can also provide companionship to our patients who are also Veterans.
